Pastor Tunde Bakare has opened up about his relationship with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari following his recent passing.
During an interview with TVC News, Pastor Bakare was asked about his previous criticisms of the Buhari administration and whether he ever had private discussions with the former president regarding the issues he had raised publicly.
In his response, Pastor Bakare declined to reveal the full details of their private conversations but confirmed that he had indeed met with Buhari several times behind closed doors. He shared that there were many issues he personally addressed with the president in private.
One particular incident that deeply angered him was the controversial raid on Sunday Igboho’s residence. Bakare revealed that he confronted Buhari about the operation, but the president denied any prior knowledge of it, which further highlighted the complexities within the administration at the time.
Furthermore, Pastor Bakare stressed that Buhari was not an economist and that it would be unfair to place the entire blame for the country's economic struggles solely on his shoulders. He explained that Buhari had appointed people to handle economic matters and emphasized the collective responsibility of a government rather than focusing all criticism on one individual.
His words in part …
“General Buhari was not an economist. He had people that were in charge of that. Some of the economic decisions made back then we’re still seeing the effect in our nation today. But it will be wrong to put everything on the head of one man. Jonathan was accused of mismanagement, corruption, this and that…”
Pastor Bakare also highlighted the need for a more nuanced understanding of leadership challenges, encouraging Nigerians to realize that systemic issues and the actions of multiple actors shape the country's fate, not just the decisions of one leader.
