American television host, Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about relocating from the United States to the United Kingdom, marking a major personal decision in her post-showbiz life.
She made this revelation during a live conversation with Richard Bacon held at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, which is close to her new residence in the scenic English countryside region of the Cotswolds.
According to Ellen, she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, initially had plans to divide their time between the US and the UK, spending only about three to four months each year overseas. However, those plans quickly changed in the aftermath of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“We arrived the day before the election, woke up to crying emojis from friends and I knew he won,” she explained, referring to Donald Trump’s victory in November 2024. Ellen added that the political climate in the U.S. shifted drastically after the election, prompting their decision to stay in the UK for good.
Beyond politics, Ellen highlighted her growing concerns over the state of LGBTQ+ rights in America. She cited alarming trends, such as rising hostility and political efforts aimed at undoing existing progress, including attempts to reverse same-sex marriage protections.
The decision to relocate was not just about politics, she said, but also about seeking a safer and more accepting environment where she and Portia could enjoy greater peace and freedom.
