A Nigerian man, who claims to be a longtime friend of popular Nigerian singer and songwriter Omah Lay, has surfaced online with an allegation that has stirred buzz on social media. According to the man, Omah Lay allegedly borrowed ₦12,000 from him in 2014 with the intention of investing in the now-defunct Ponzi scheme, MMM, and has yet to repay the amount.
The claim was brought to public attention through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @AsakyGRN. The post included a video showing the man, who identifies himself as someone who knew Omah Lay from his early days in Port Harcourt, narrating the story.
In the video, the man explained that back in 2014, when they were both still in the same neighborhood, Omah Lay convinced him to lend him ₦12,000 to invest in MMM, a controversial money-doubling scheme that was highly popular in Nigeria during that period.
He said that although he wasn’t interested in Ponzi schemes, he eventually gave in and lent the money because of the trust and friendship they shared at the time. He insists that since then, he has not been reimbursed.
His exact words were: “He owes me ₦12,000. When he was in the hood, he told me to invest in MMM. I said I didn’t do those things, but he said it would be profitable because others were doing it. He asked me for ₦12,000. I gave him the ₦12,000.”
The man continued in the video, claiming that despite Omah Lay’s success and fame today, the debt has remained unsettled. He said he only decided to go public after feeling ignored and sidelined.
Following the viral spread of the video, netizens have taken to the comment section with a mix of humor, skepticism, and curiosity. While some supported the man’s claim or empathized with his frustration, others questioned the timing and intention behind the public call-out.
