Popular Nigerian singer and award-winning songwriter, Simi, has publicly addressed Nigerians, urging them to stop calling her daughter, Adejare, by the nickname âDudukeâ, a name inspired by one of her most famous songs.
The music star, who rose to even greater prominence during her pregnancy in 2020 with the release of her hit track âDuduke,â has expressed discomfort over the publicâs continued association of the song title with her daughterâs identity.
In a recent video clip that went viral on social media, Simi lamented how many Nigerians still refer to her child as âDuduke,â despite the fact that the name holds no specific meaning.
She clarified that although the song was emotionally significant and widely embraced by fans during her pregnancy, the word âDudukeâ itself was simply a creative expression derived from the rhythm of the song and not meant to serve as a personal identifier for her daughter.
âPeople call my daughter Duduke which I donât like. It doesnât mean anything. As in, if it means something good⌠it is just a beat. I get it; itâs coming from a good place and I try not to react,â Simi stated during her remarks.
The singer, who shares her daughter Adejare with fellow music artist Adekunle Gold, emphasized that while she understands the affection behind the gesture, she prefers that her daughter be called by her real name and not by a media-given alias.
