University of Abuja Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has raised concerns over the land reduction of the institution, stating that 2,000 hectares out of the 4,000 hectares left for the university are unusable due to mountainous terrain.
He made this statement during an interview on Arise TV, where he shed light on the current land challenges facing the university.
It would be recalled that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had significantly reduced the land allocated to the University of Abuja, cutting it down from 11,000 hectares to 4,000 hectares.
Dr. Tejuoso expressed his concern over the impact of this drastic cut, especially in light of proposed academic and research expansions.
He mentioned that the Cancer Research Centre of Nigeria was interested in partnering with the University of Abuja to develop a cutting-edge research facility. However, with half of the remaining land being mountainous and thus difficult to develop, the university now faces a major challenge in accommodating such initiatives.
His words …
“Even the 4,000 hectares, 2,000 out of it is a mountain. When you fly out of the airport, the mountain you see is in the university. Looking at what has been proposed, we only have 2,000 hectares, because we have a mountain of 2,000. Maybe minister Wike should come and take over the mountain and develop it….”
The statement has triggered reactions among stakeholders, with many questioning the rationale behind such a significant reduction in land allocated to a federal university. Concerns continue to grow over the long-term implications on academic development, infrastructure, and partnerships.
