The Northern Elders Forum has expressed deep grief and a profound sense of loss following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a rare, selfless, and incorruptible leader who dedicated his entire life to the service of Nigeria with unwavering integrity and discipline.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued shortly after the sad news was confirmed, the Forum paid glowing tribute to the late statesman, highlighting his unwavering dedication to nation-building, his courageous fight against corruption, and his enduring legacy of transparency and accountability in governance.
According to the statement, Buhari’s life journey was a remarkable testament to simplicity, humility, patriotism, and a strong sense of duty to the nation. His character embodied the spirit of sacrifice, national pride, and an unyielding commitment to the ideals of unity and progress for Nigeria.
“General Buhari was more than just a military officer and a political leader; he was a towering symbol of integrity and principled leadership,” the statement noted. “He firmly believed in the vision of a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria, and throughout his tenure, he worked tirelessly to achieve this dream. His administration promoted discipline, accountability, and an unshakeable belief in the potential of the Nigerian people.”
Furthermore, the Forum acknowledged Buhari’s role as a devout nationalist and a committed Pan-Africanist who championed Nigeria’s sovereignty on the global stage, defended the nation’s territorial integrity, and played a significant role in advancing democratic values and good governance throughout Africa.
The Forum also remembered Buhari’s strategic alliance with key political figures, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other influential leaders, which paved the way for the creation of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This landmark coalition led to the historic victory that ended the 16-year dominance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, marking a major turning point in Nigeria’s political history.
“His passing marks a solemn and historic moment for our nation. While his immediate family and close allies bear the deepest pain, this is a collective loss for all Nigerians who admired his honesty, courage, and vision. His inspiring legacy, rooted in selfless service, steadfast duty, and a clear national vision, will continue to guide future leaders and inspire countless citizens to work towards a stronger, more united Nigeria,” the statement added.
President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday in London while receiving medical treatment.
He previously served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and also held the position of military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s history through his decades of service and sacrifice.
