The Emir of Gusau, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71 after battling a prolonged illness.
According to reports, the respected traditional ruler died on Friday in Abuja, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
The news of his demise was confirmed by the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, in an official statement released by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris Bala.
Governor Lawal expressed his heartfelt sorrow over the passing of the monarch, describing the incident as a painful loss not only to the people of Zamfara State but to the entire Northern region and Nigeria at large.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau. His Highness’s passing is a huge loss for the people of Zamfara State, as well as for the North and Nigeria as a whole,” the governor said in the statement.
He praised the late Emir for his selfless leadership, wisdom, and tireless efforts toward the development and peace of the state. Governor Lawal noted that the monarch was a unifying figure and a father to many, including himself.
Dr. Ibrahim Bello was enthroned as the 15th Emir of Gusau on March 16, 2015. During his ten-year reign, he earned the respect and admiration of his people for his unwavering dedication, humility, and strong Islamic faith. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize the emirate and promote unity among diverse communities.
Before ascending to the throne, the late Emir served meritoriously in public service, where he rose through the ranks to become a Permanent Secretary in both the old Sokoto State and later Zamfara State. His administrative skills and leadership qualities made him a role model for many within and beyond his domain.
“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guides me and other state leaders. May the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah,” Governor Lawal added in his emotional tribute.
The passing of Dr. Ibrahim Bello marks the end of a significant chapter in the traditional leadership of Zamfara State. Tributes have continued to pour in from various leaders, traditional institutions, and citizens who remember him as a man of integrity, vision, and compassion.
