Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has openly criticized the current state of governance in Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the country is currently in “bondage.” He attributed this to the alarming levels of insecurity, economic deterioration, and divisive leadership that have become defining features of the Tinubu administration.

Obasanjo made these remarks at his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State on Friday during a courtesy visit by a delegation of southern leaders from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The visit was part of the party’s consultation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We are in bondage,” Obasanjo emphasized. “Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us.” His statement, reported by The Guardian, was a call for reflection and spiritual intervention in the face of the nation's growing difficulties.

While reiterating his withdrawal from active partisan politics, Obasanjo affirmed that he remains deeply invested in Nigeria’s development. “I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress,” he stated.

The former president also voiced frustration over the persistent ethnic polarization within the Nigerian political system. He argued that although the country has been led by presidents from different ethnic groups — Fulani, Hausa, and Yoruba — none have fully embodied the role of a “true Nigerian president.”

“We’ve had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we’ve yet to have a true Nigerian president, one for all, not just their tribe,” Obasanjo lamented. “Until we do, our problems will remain.”

Obasanjo urged Nigerians not to be passive but to remain alert and actively involved in shaping the country’s future. He warned that apathy would allow selfish and unqualified individuals to take control of leadership positions. He concluded by stressing the need for a truly nationalistic and visionary leader who can unite the country and steer it away from its current perilous path.
