The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flag bearer, Mr. Peter Obi, has dismissed recent warnings from the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, declaring without hesitation that he reserves the right to visit Edo State whenever he deems it necessary, regardless of any threats or political opposition.

Speaking during a press briefing held on Thursday at the premises of his alma mater, Christ The King College (CKC), located in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi emphasized that he has faced numerous threats in the past and such intimidation tactics would not hinder him from carrying out his engagements or visiting any part of the country, including Edo State.

This statement came as a direct response to a controversial warning issued by Governor Okpebholo, who recently stated that Obi must not step into Edo State again without obtaining prior approval from the state government — a warning that many interpreted as a veiled threat against Obi’s safety.

In a bold and unwavering tone, Obi responded, “I’m used to receiving threats. I will go to Edo any time I want.” His words underscored his resilience and his continued commitment to national unity, dialogue, and development regardless of political friction.

During his visit to CKC, Obi was there not for politics but to demonstrate support for education. He presented a substantial ₦50 million donation on behalf of the school’s alumni body to aid the college in its efforts to enhance academic infrastructure and improve learning environments for students. He reiterated the importance of giving back to institutions that shaped one’s future, adding that quality education remains one of the pillars of progress in any society.

Obi further used the opportunity to advise Governor Okpebholo to redirect his attention toward improving the quality of public institutions in Edo State rather than resorting to issuing threats. He stressed that governance should be about service, inclusion, and development through collaboration, rather than political intimidation.

Present at the event to receive Obi were the Archbishop of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke; members of the school’s administrative leadership; and the student body, led by their senior prefect, Ejike Ekene.

In their respective remarks, both the Archbishop and the senior prefect commended Obi for his consistent and passionate support for education and national development. They described his gesture as not only generous but also deeply inspiring to the younger generation.

Concluding his visit, Obi lauded the college's management for their “phenomenal work” in maintaining academic excellence and pledged his continued support. He reaffirmed that investing in education is the most strategic path toward building a stronger, more equitable, and prosperous Nigeria.
