Rep Renovates 80 Cemeteries in Zamfara

Kabiru Mai Palace, a federal lawmaker and member of the House of Representatives, has embarked on a unique and thoughtful initiative by renovating 80 cemeteries in Gusau and Tsafe local government areas of Zamfara State as part of his ongoing constituency project efforts.

The lawmaker, who represents the Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, launched the cemetery rehabilitation project in celebration of his second anniversary in office. The event, which drew local leaders, religious scholars, and residents, marked the official commissioning of the completed renovations.

During his remarks at the inauguration held on Tuesday, Mai Palace stressed the importance of preserving and caring for cemeteries, which he described as sacred and communal spaces that serve as the final resting place for all individuals, regardless of status.

He explained that a recent assessment had shown many cemeteries across the constituency were in disrepair—overgrown with weeds, lacking fences, and without clear demarcation—prompting the need for urgent attention and renovation.

“This project is not only a moral responsibility but also aligns with the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the maintenance and cleanliness of burial grounds,” he said. “Proper upkeep of these spaces is believed to help avert calamities and bring peace to communities.”

The renovation project included the clearing of overgrown vegetation, reconstruction of perimeter fencing, installation of gates, restoration of headstones, and general cleanup of the sites. Community members have applauded the initiative as both timely and respectful.

In addition to the renovation, the lawmaker announced plans to sustain the maintenance of the cemeteries by engaging dedicated guards, providing adequate tools, and ensuring regular payment of allowances to workers responsible for managing and cleaning the sites.

This initiative has been widely commended by religious leaders and local stakeholders, who described it as a reflection of Mai Palace’s commitment to community welfare, cultural preservation, and spiritual responsibility.[/p>
