Peter Obi Explains Absence at Buhari’s Burial

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly shared the reason why he was unable to attend Buhari’s burial ceremony in Daura on Tuesday, despite being expected among the prominent dignitaries who gathered to pay their last respects.

It would be recalled that the late former president Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina state, in accordance with Islamic burial rites. The ceremony drew high-profile figures from across Nigeria’s political and social spectrum, all coming together to honor Buhari’s memory and legacy.

While many top politicians, traditional rulers, and influential personalities were present at the solemn event, Peter Obi’s noticeable absence sparked curiosity and speculation among observers and supporters. In response, Obi addressed the issue directly, clarifying that his absence was not deliberate but rather a result of unforeseen logistical challenges.

Peter Obi explained that he faced significant difficulties securing a flight to Katsina on the day of the burial. According to him, no flights were available due to security restrictions and operational limitations surrounding the influx of dignitaries attending the funeral. Additionally, he noted that even if there had been flights, the Katsina airport had been temporarily closed to accommodate the heavy traffic and ensure security protocols for the event.

He further emphasized his continued respect and mourning for the late president, stating that arriving a day or two after the main event still demonstrates solidarity and condolence. Obi assured the public that his intentions were genuine and that he remained deeply saddened by Buhari’s passing.

In his words: “It was difficult coming here yesterday because there was no flight. Even if there was a flight, you can’t land in Katsina airport. It was all closed because there was a lot of dignitaries. Anyone who comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning…”

His statement helped dispel rumors suggesting neglect or political tension, reinforcing the importance of unity and mutual respect among Nigerian leaders, especially in moments of national loss and grief.
