Atletico Madrid are reportedly emerging as the leading contenders to secure the signature of Manchester United winger Antony, as they ramp up efforts to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 La Liga campaign.
According to a report by The i Paper, the Spanish capital club have turned their focus to the Brazilian winger following the breakdown of their negotiations with Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, who is now on the verge of sealing a move to Inter Milan after agreeing personal terms.
Antony, 25, is widely expected to depart Old Trafford this summer after falling out of favour at United. The club is reportedly open to letting him go for a fee in the region of £30 million, making him an attractive prospect for clubs across Europe seeking attacking reinforcements.
During the second half of the 2024/25 season, Antony enjoyed a successful loan spell at Real Betis, where he reignited his form by scoring nine goals and providing five assists in all competitions. His performances not only impressed Betis but also drew attention from other top-tier clubs in Spain.
Although Betis are reportedly eager to retain Antony on a permanent basis, they are struggling financially and unable to meet Manchester United’s current valuation of the player. That has left the door open for Atletico Madrid to swoop in.
With the potential summer departure of Samuel Lino, Atletico could soon have a vacancy on the wing. The funds generated from Lino’s sale could help facilitate a move for Antony, whom manager Diego Simeone is said to view as a natural fit for the right flank in his tactical system.
Currently, Atletico’s right-wing options are limited. Youngster Giuliano Simeone and versatile midfielder Marcos Llorente have been deployed in the role, though Llorente often plays deeper in a full-back position. Antony’s profile as a pacey, skillful wide attacker makes him an appealing addition.
Despite the mounting interest, there have been no official negotiations yet between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United. However, reports indicate that the Spanish side are monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to act quickly should formal talks begin in the coming weeks.
Atletico Madrid are now widely regarded as front-runners in the pursuit of Antony, and a deal could gain momentum once key departures are confirmed and budget flexibility is secured.
