Super Falcons star striker, Asisat Oshoala, has firmly denied widespread rumours suggesting she has retired from international football, assuring fans that she remains committed to representing Nigeria on the global stage.
The experienced forward and six-time African Player of the Year addressed the speculation following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 win against hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held in Rabat.
Speaking with journalists after lifting the trophy, the 30-year-old Barcelona Femeni attacker expressed surprise at the rumours, making it clear that she has not stepped away from the national team.
“I don’t know where that came from but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on,” Oshoala confidently stated when asked about the retirement claims.
Although she wasn’t consistently named in the starting lineup throughout the tournament, Oshoala was a vital member of Nigeria’s 23-player squad. Her experience and leadership were instrumental in guiding the Super Falcons to a record-extending WAFCON title.
Since making her senior international debut in 2013, Oshoala has enjoyed an illustrious career, quickly rising to prominence with her standout performances during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where she won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot, and in the same year’s African Women’s Championship.
She has since become a cornerstone of the Nigerian women’s national team and holds the distinction of being the first African player — male or female — to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments (2015, 2019, and 2023).
The 2024 WAFCON victory marks her fourth continental title, adding to previous triumphs in 2014, 2016, and 2018. With her legacy already cemented, Oshoala continues to serve as a role model for aspiring female footballers across Africa and beyond.
