Ademola Lookman has officially submitted a transfer request to Atalanta, marking a significant development that brings an end to weeks of mounting speculation surrounding his future with the Serie A side.

In a bold and emotionally charged statement released on Sunday, the Nigerian international forward thanked the Bergamo-based club and its loyal fanbase for their continued support throughout his time at the club. However, he did not shy away from expressing his disappointment over recent events behind the scenes.

“After three wonderful years in Bergamo, it is the right time to move on and experience a new adventure,” Lookman stated. “This decision hasn’t come lightly, and I’ve spent months reflecting on what’s best for my career and my peace of mind.”

Lookman revealed that there had been a long-standing verbal agreement with the club’s hierarchy, which would allow him to leave if a reasonable and fair offer was received. Unfortunately, he claims that Atalanta are now going back on their word, preventing his desired exit without giving clear reasons for the change of stance.

The 26-year-old attacker, who famously scored a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final last season to help Atalanta lift their first European trophy, said the situation has left him frustrated and disappointed.

“After many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me by people at the top of the club… I sadly feel I have no choice but to speak out publicly,” he said in the statement. “My love for the fans and teammates remains unchanged, but I can no longer stay silent.”

Despite continuing to deliver top-level performances on the pitch, Lookman disclosed that he has endured “extremely difficult moments” in private and behind the scenes, which he believes have been overlooked or dismissed by those in charge of the club’s affairs.

Throughout the turmoil, Lookman emphasized that he has always maintained a high level of professionalism and commitment to the club’s badge, giving his all even in tough circumstances and continuing to represent the team with pride and passion.

The former Leicester City and RB Leipzig star has reportedly given the green light to a move to Italian rivals Inter Milan, who have shown concrete interest in acquiring his services. However, Atalanta are currently holding out for a transfer fee in the region of €50 million, a figure that has stalled negotiations so far.

Lookman's decision to go public with his frustration may now put additional pressure on Atalanta’s board to reconsider their position, especially as the summer transfer window enters a crucial phase with just weeks remaining before the new season begins.

It remains to be seen whether Inter or another top club will meet Atalanta’s valuation, but what is clear is that Lookman's time in Bergamo appears to be coming to an emotional and tense conclusion.
