Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has officially announced that he will leave the Premier League club this summer, ending what has been a remarkable ten-year tenure in North London.
The 33-year-old South Korean forward, who made his move to Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015, has enjoyed a decorated and emotional journey with the team, scoring an impressive total of 173 goals in 454 appearances. He leaves as one of Tottenham’s all-time greats and most beloved figures in modern club history.
Son’s contribution to Tottenham has gone far beyond his goals. Known for his humility, relentless work ethic, and electrifying pace, he became a fan favourite and ultimately rose to become club captain, succeeding Hugo Lloris in 2024. His leadership culminated in Tottenham’s historic 2–1 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final this past May — the club’s first major trophy in 17 years.
During a heartfelt press conference in Seoul, where Tottenham are currently participating in a pre-season tour, Son reflected on his journey with the club and the weight of his decision to move on.
“I came to north London as a kid, a very young boy who didn’t even speak English,” Son said. “Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment. This was the most difficult decision I’ve had to make in my career.”
Although he still has one year remaining on his contract — which runs until 2026 — strong speculation suggests that Son could be heading to Major League Soccer, with Los Angeles FC leading the race to sign him.
While the exact timing of his departure has not yet been confirmed, many believe that Tottenham’s upcoming friendly match against Newcastle United in Seoul this Sunday may be his final appearance in a Spurs shirt — a fitting send-off in front of his home supporters.
Tottenham’s newly appointed head coach, Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou in June, expressed deep admiration for the club icon:
“Son is a true Spurs legend. One of the greatest players to play in the Premier League. His loyalty, his character, his footballing brilliance — he will never be forgotten,” Frank said.
“If this is his last game, what a place to do it — back home in Seoul, in front of thousands of fans who adore him. It could be a beautiful ending.”
Tottenham Hotspur still have one major fixture before the new season kicks off — the UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain on August 13. However, there is a strong possibility that Son's departure will be finalised before then.
