A tragic accident occurred in Balsas, southern Maranhão, where an 18-year-old girl lost her life and seven others, including three children, were critically injured after being struck by a speeding truck.
The heartbreaking incident happened on Sunday, the 18th, and was captured in a viral video on TikTok, showing a group of pedestrians walking along a main road before a high-speed pickup truck suddenly appeared and violently collided with them, sending several victims flying across the street.
Reports confirm that the impact claimed the life of Maria Eduarda Silva, who was also the mother of one of the injured children. Her sister, Maria Aparecida Silva, remains hospitalized in critical condition, while three other victims are currently receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the truck was identified as Maria do Perpétuo Socorro Cardoso Weiler. According to sources, she refused to undergo a breathalyzer test at the scene but showed visible signs of intoxication. She was arrested immediately and is scheduled to provide a statement to the police on Monday, the 19th.
In response to the tragedy, the Civil Police have launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
