Buhari's Final Days at The London Clinic

A recent report has revealed that Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former president, received treatment at The London Clinic, an elite medical institution in the UK where the cost of intensive care can reach up to £3,500 per day.

This world-class facility is located on Harley Street, central London, and is known for serving affluent patients seeking exceptional privacy and the highest standards of medical care. The hospital is a favored destination for global elites, including political figures, foreign dignitaries, and royal family members.

While standard room charges range from £1,000 to £1,800 per night, VIP suites cost as much as £2,500. Additionally, consultation fees vary between £100 and £750, and the cost of major surgeries can exceed £13,000, depending on the procedure.

Buhari was said to have traveled to London in April for what was initially described as a routine check-up. However, his health reportedly deteriorated, leading to his admission into the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Despite reports that he remained in good spirits and was preparing for discharge, Buhari experienced sudden breathing difficulties around midday on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Medical staff attempted to stabilize him, but he passed away around 4:30 p.m.

His death was officially confirmed by his former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a brief statement issued later that day. The exact cause of death was not revealed, though it is widely known that Buhari had battled health challenges for several years.

According to his nephew, Mamman Daura, the former president showed signs of recovery the night before and had been hopeful about returning home. However, circumstances changed rapidly on the day of his passing.

Founded in 1932, The London Clinic treats over 120,000 patients annually and is recognized globally for its excellence in cancer care, orthopaedics, gastrointestinal surgery, robotic-assisted operations, and critical care services. It houses 13 ICU beds, 10 state-of-the-art operating theatres, and five Macmillan Cancer Support Centres.

The clinic is equipped with the latest medical technologies, including the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system, advanced MRI and CT scanners, and fully digital diagnostic tools. Its team comprises over 900 experienced consultants and doctors, many of whom hold affiliations with the Royal College of Surgeons.

Sources within Nigeria’s medical community have confirmed that The London Clinic is a popular choice among the country's political elite for its privacy, quality of service, and advanced treatment options. It is also reported that former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, had previously been admitted to the same facility and was later discharged.

After news of Buhari’s death broke, several videos emerged online showing family members and close associates arriving at the hospital. Although the specific duration of his stay remains undisclosed, credible sources confirmed he spent his final days in the ICU.
