A Nigerian man has stirred up major controversy online after publicly declaring his intent to file a petition seeking the permanent ban of the popular reality television show, Big Brother Naija, branding it “Haram” — a term in Islamic law meaning forbidden.
This strong opinion was shared by a user identified as @Arewa_Source on X (formerly known as Twitter). In his post, he condemned the show’s values and content, arguing that it is contrary to the moral and religious standards upheld by many Nigerians, particularly in the North.
He wrote: “Big Brother Naija is Haram and I will be sending in a petition to get it permanently banned in Nigeria.”
The post was made shortly after the launch of Big Brother Naija Season 10, which introduced 29 housemates — 15 female and 14 male contestants — into the house. The season had already generated massive online buzz, with fans excited about the new format and participants.
However, the man’s declaration sparked a heated online debate, with social media users from across Nigeria reacting strongly to the suggestion of banning the reality show. While a few supported his stance, the majority criticized his priorities and questioned why similar energy wasn’t being directed toward more urgent national concerns such as insecurity and poverty.
