A Nigerian lady has sparked widespread conversation on social media after revealing her recent experience with a man who turned her down solely because she speaks Pidgin English fluently.
Sharing her story on TikTok under the handle @elegantglow_, the lady explained that she had known the man for two years, and their paths crossed again recently, leading to renewed conversations that hinted at a possible romantic relationship.
However, as they grew closer, he reportedly began to express discomfort with her frequent use of Pidgin English, something he claimed he found off-putting. Despite admitting that he occasionally uses Pidgin himself, he told her that hearing it from her made him uneasy — particularly because of how fluently she spoke it.
According to the lady, the man became especially critical whenever she spoke Pidgin with her siblings. He allegedly told her it was improper, stating that, as the first child, she should set a better example for her younger ones by avoiding such a 'street language.'
Recounting his words, she said, “He told me I’m not suitable to be the mother of his future children because I would teach them Pidgin.”
She went on to say that in one of their deeper conversations about dating and values, the man firmly stated that her fluency in Pidgin was a major red flag for him — one that would prevent any future between them.
Her video quickly attracted widespread attention online, sparking mixed reactions from viewers. While many criticized the man's views as elitist and narrow-minded, others empathized with the woman, defending her right to speak her language and expressing pride in the cultural significance of Pidgin English.
See some reactions below:
Mustapha: “Pidgin can be fun among friends, but many men don’t find it attractive when women use it often. It’s seen as a street language, mostly used by guys to show dominance or bond with their boys. But when women speak it, it can come off as rough or lacking class. As men who value elegance and modesty, we naturally admire women who carry themselves with grace and speak in a refined way. It just makes them stand out as more respectable and desirable.”
Amina Ghali: “It’s coz you are comfortable with them. And if he can’t accept you that way, his loss my dear.”
PRICELESS JEWELS BY SUNSHINE: “I can relate because I have been there before.”
Yar_mama: “My babe enjoys my Pidgin o😹 From Hausa we will sharply shift to Pidgin then English. We no Dey form for here. If Pidgin hard us, we switch to Hausa.
